ATTENTION: CHANGES TO LAWS REGARDING HUMAN SEXUALITY INSTRUCTION as of JUNE 2021:
Applies to: Aim for Success, Freedom to Succeed, Determined to Succeed, Next Up, and Focus on Success presentations.
House Bill 1525 passed legislation and was signed into law on June 16, 2021. Section 7 of HB 1525 includes changes to the Texas Education Code regarding human sexuality instruction.
As part of this new legislation, School/District must obtain written consent from the student’s parent/guardian for ALL students attending or viewing the presentation.
HB 1525 Section 7, Section 28.004, Subsection (i-2)
(i-2) Before a student may be provided with human sexuality instruction, a school district must obtain the written consent of the student’s parent. A request for written consent under this subsection:
(1) may not be included with any other notification or request for written consent provided to the parent, other than the notice provided under Subsection (i); and
(2) must be provided to the parent not later than the 14th day before the date on which the human sexuality instruction begins.
Our recommendation is that you request a “Yes” or “No” response to help ensure that each parent submits a form. We hope this will help to reduce the number of forgotten or lost forms.
Program specific examples of Parent Information Letters with Opt-In Forms can be found in the “Download Resources” section on the previous page.
