Last month, 21 Just Say YES student mentors from the Peer-to-Peer Mentoring program (along with three JSY staff members) attended the 22nd Annual FRIENDS FIRST STARS National Conference held at The University of Colorado – Colorado Springs. The action-packed, four-day event empowered teens to become leaders, taught them how to build healthy relationships, and understand the importance of avoiding high-risk behaviors in order to achieve success. A special thank you to Southwest Airlines for donating a portion of our students’ round-trip tickets!
- Large Group Sessions: Participants gathered twice a day for motivating rallies with skits, entertainment, and nationally acclaimed motivational speakers.
- Family Groups: Participants met in small group discussions led by SNC staff. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to meet new people from other states, and were able to build a support network with others who are making healthy choices.
- Workshops: Workshops were interactive, educational, and fun! At the beginning of the conference, participants selected the workshops which they wanted to attend. Workshop categories included: relationships; mentoring, leadership, communication, high-risk behavior avoidance.
- Social Events: Each day participants had allotted time to kick back and have fun! Three fun evening events in addition to some afternoon events gave participants the opportunity to meet teens from all over the country.
